Each year, the festival initiates an open call for art installations in response to a particular theme. For 2018, it is “Sensoria”. Our chosen proposal, the PERI-PERISCOPE, brings in everything Clockenflap has to offer into one airy little hub. Following a fantastic three-day weekend of festivities, the PERI-PERISCOPE was then dissembled and donated to be reincarnated as exhibition infrastructure for the 2018 Hong Kong North District Flower Bird Insect and Fish Show. https://pulp.works/1702-Echigo-Tsumari-Hong-Kong-House Sat, 01 Dec 2018 04:21:15 +0000 puLP https://pulp.works/1702-Echigo-Tsumari-Hong-Kong-House The Hong Kong House at Echigo-Tsumari Triennial 2017Location: Niigata Prefecture, Japan Client: Art Promotion Office, Hong Kong The eponymous modern art festival is held in the Niigata Prefecture in Japan, a snowy region in the winter. Echigo-Tsumari’s rich landscape of dense forests and rivers provide the perfect backdrop for an art festival with a mission of reconnecting people to place-specific art and installation. The open call for designs of Hong Kong House, an artists’ residence and exhibition space, was jointly organised by the Art Promotion Office of Hong Kong and the festival’s organisers. The two entrances into the house, private and public, are at opposite corners. The artists’ entry takes them immediately up the staircase to the living quarters, whereas the public entrance positions visitors from the narrower end of the gallery where the reception sits. The client was considering the purchase of a 33m2 unit from a family of four that had resided in it for over 20 years. The family had been able to fit two bedrooms into the compact apartment, complete with a kitchen tightly fitted between the living-dining room and bathroom. As an urban design feature, it is expected to provide shelter, shade, ventilation, and sufficient space to accommodate full-fledged economic and social activities. As a work of architecture, it is challenging for its size, non-specificity inprogram, and the potential for mass production. While these conditions typically provide sufficient context and constraints for a sensible and functional form, this proposal identifies the kiosk as a nostalgic cultural symbol of the beach.
